About

My works begin with walks, mostly on Öland, the landscape where I grew up and which I know intimately. It is changes in the landscape that capture my attention: a stretch of coast where the sea has hollowed out the ground, soil finely ground by hooves, a dried-up pond, dead juniper bushes, and other markers where traces become material to work with. These traces also speak of a changing global world, a changing climate.

I collect stones, clay, soil, and plant matter from these places. In the studio, I carefully transform the earth into pigment and bring it into an artistic context, where I can explore each site’s potential to tell stories about our time, our heritage, and our history. From the pigment, I make crayons, a kind of dry pastel, varying in character depending on how much the earth has been processed. It is a craft and a slow process, where each crayon requires time and care.

The papers and fabrics I use are carefully chosen to align with the idea and materiality of the work. Sometimes I use fabrics that already carry a history, or paper that has undergone a process connected to the character of the site.

I work with seemingly abstract drawings and paintings, yet the soil and the place are concrete, like the geological processes, those that have been and, above all, those yet to come. In larger works, where several images together form a site-specific whole, I aim to evoke a sense of time passed and unfold a fragment of the landscape that was the starting point. In something close to a 1:1 scale, I can recreate a place to walk within.
